Halloumi is a great delicacy and can be paired with many things. BBQ meat or grilled meat is one of those things. Skewers of halloumi cheese and veggies is a great way to balance a meal so that you can have some protein, dairy and vegetables all in your plate. It’s especially fun for kids; an easy way to get vitamins in to the body, as well as eye appealing to have those vibrant colours on a dining table.
I absolutely love my red onions, and it’s a total must for me to barbecue red onions alongside my meat. Now for the past few years I like to take it a step further and skewer on other vegetables as well as halloumi cheese. This has worked out great since I’ve had kids as it means picky eaters will always have something they can choose. Believe me it’s not always skids that are picky eaters, adults are picky too!
Of course living in London, barbecue weather is scarce and we are lucky to have some hot days amongst the glorious rainy weather to grill our meats and veggies in the garden. So as an alternative we tend to grill our meats indoors, and I can happily say that these skewers taste great and just the same served alongside grilled, air fried or baked food. Very low maintenance, and not much work required to be honest. A great side to any meal really, and such an easy way to complete your 5 a day veggies. My kids love halloumi, so these skewers go down a treat. I mean, who can say no to melt in the mouth halloumi cheese. Serve it with sauces and dips of choice and you won’t see a trace left!
If you are vegetarian then it would still be appetising with a veggie steak. Also, if there are certain vegetables you don’t like, you can easily swap them and replace with ones you do like. Corn for example, or mushrooms, would taste great too. All in all, a very easy side to create, and one you can enjoy to your full as well.
