The very first time I had the privilege of tasting Prego sauce was around a good 6 years ago, whilst I was still living in Canada. A lovely relative whom I am very close with, very kindly sent it as a gift to me from the UK. I was intrigued by it and asked her what it was used for; she explained to me it is a very versatile sauce and can be used for cooking, marinating, drizzling and dipping. So I used it mainly as a dip and absolutely loved it. The sauce is quite unique, with a different taste to my regular mayo, adding that hint of chilli.
The brand of the Prego sauce I had received as a gift was the Minnie’s brand. Minnies is a brand which makes a lot of different sauces, based in South Africa. However, South Africa also has Nando’s branded Prego sauce, which is the one I have used for my chicken recipe.
What is Prego Sauce?
When I say Prego sauce, I’m not talking about the traditional Italian branded tomato sauce. I am talking about the Prego sauce found in South Africa. These Prego sauces are of a Portuguese influence. The reason why there is a lot of Portuguese influence on the South African food is because of colonisation in the past. It has a lovely unique flavour which makes it stand out from other sauces. Two key ingredients I know that are used are garlic and mustard.
In the UK I have purchased these sauces from Leicester, usually from Mr Burger or Frozen World. As I do not visit Leicestershire that often, I stock up on my sauces whenever I do happen to go. These shops often stock a lot of products from South Africa, which you won’t find in your regular grocery store.
As you don’t need to use the whole bottle of sauce for this recipe (unless you are making a really large batch and doubling or tripling the ingredients), then there’s more then enough of the sauce for you to use as a dip as well, which is a great plus point.
I’ve shared the recipe below. Enjoy!
Ingredients
1.5 chicken, cut into pieces
2 onions
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/2 tsp red chilli powder
1 tsp mixed herbs
1 tsp salt
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp Aromat seasoning
2 tsp crushed garlic
2 tbsp creamy garlic sauce
8 tbsp Prego sauce
2 slices of butter
1/2 cup of water
Method

Cut up the onions into thick slices and then sauté them in a thick slice of butter with 2 tsp of crushed garlic in a deep pan.

Add your chicken along with the turmeric powder, chilli powder, black pepper, aromat, mixed herbs, salt and paprika. Mix well. Pour in 1/2 cup of water into the pan and cook the chicken on low-medium heat.

When the chicken is nearly done, add the creamy garlic sauce and the Prego sauce. Add a thin slice of butter, mix well and leave on low heat for a few minutes until a thick sauce is formed.

Serve hot with chips/wedges and salad.
